Literary Devices

LITERARY  DEVICES



metaphor- Comparing two unlike things 
                   without using the words "like" or  
                    "as".

simile- Comparing two unlike things with the
                 words "like" or "as".


personification- Gives a non-human thing human
                                  qualities.

allusion-   referencing or hinting at another:
                  story,person, or history-- hoping 
                    you'll notice

foreshadowing-  provides clues/hints 
                                                          in the text about is to come.


flashback- a character takes the reader back in 
                     time and shares a memory as a 
                   device for explaining something.
                   Then the character returns the reader 
                     to the present to conclude the story.
